According to Google (or Matt Cutts) directories are allowed to charge a review fee without being penalized.
Search the forum for "paid links" there are plenty of threads already that cover the details. |

$200 - $300... hmmmm if I were you, I would get a complilation of few articles/content done from some professional, or perhaps by myself, in case had the time, and would then use some natural linking strategies to fetch some nice links for the same and in short, I will get a link bait ready with that amount and capture some quality links with it..
Regards

Consider yahoo directory first. It will give you some idea as to the possible value of return from others. At least with yahoo you get 1 decent link.
Personnally with that little money I would consider a night out on the town. I can not see that amount making much difference really.

NO. For 300 bucks I'd simply keep the cash or hire someone to write 2-3 link bait articles. Don't put that money into links especially Yahoo! (since it lasts one year). Keep your money, or heck, get some SEO training for that, but don't buy links. In reality buying links is a game for big players who have consistent budgets. If you're in any industry/market that's bigger than snufalufagus then 300 bucks won't take you far.

This is a little bit on or off topic... dependent upon your individual interpretation. Anyway... my opinion:
Google, being the gorilla in the room, more or less dicates what will and will not be acceptable from webmasters in the world of SEO. We are seeing a sea change (total revolution) in how sites/pages are viewed. Gone are the days where onpage SEO makes a major difference. Like it or not... Your site/page MUST have an agreed upon reason to exist. You MUST have relevant non-purchased or reciprocally traded links to your important pages. If you do not... you place low in the SERPs or slip out of the primary indes. I personally like what is happening. From the start we have only gone for one-way and/or authority links. Have we been damaged by the discounting of some links?... Yes... but the true end result has our pages even more imbedded in the top serp's for many tough terms. Bottomline: Focus on your content. If your content is appreciated and searched for... you will get the links and positioning deserved. If you are in this to scam the search engines... your days are numbered.

I disagree on the Yahoo part and agree on the second part. Sorry but unless you are selling fiberglass bongs you are not likely to get much of a bump for $300.00. Doesn't seem to be much competition in that category. If you can find some related directories and the page where your link will reside is indexed by Google and you feel you have to spend that $300.00, that is what I would try other than night on the town.
