Pages dropping out of index like crazy

A few weeks ago, my traffic from G got clobbered, now, compared to 5 days ago, I'm seeing a drop of 12% of my pages on one site and over 50% of my pages on another from the index altogether.

No, not the dreaded "no description", I'm talking GONE gone, as in POOF!!

Anyone else experiencing something like this?

Neither site has been down, and G does visit regularly, but now I have to check my logs to see what the heck is happening.

If it's a newer/deeper site it's pretty common to see wide fluctuations in the number of pages indexed.

Nope. Both sites have been around for over 6 months and steady in their index showing, until now.

I have noticed G reporting a considerably lower total number of hits for my queries. But I haven't actually witnessed sites being dropped from the serps in my case. In the end the higher number was always corrected, as soon as I tried to get to the last serp. Last thing I want is for the "G is full" theory to pop up again

Owen, have you tried one of the google dance tools (like McDar's) to see if it is a datacenter-related phenomenon?

6 months is pretty new IMO. How many total pages exist?

The more inbound links you get; the more stable your SERPs will become. Lately, I've seen most of mine become very stable and improve slightly from day to day, just by getting more inbound links.

Internal linking structure is important it seems. If your pages are interlinked well, your site as a whole will do a lot better in the SERPs.

Each site has in the neighborhood of 5000 pages.

Both also have a fair number of backlinks. The older of the two, the one where I lost 12% of the pages, has been steady at 100% index (or near enough) for 4-5 months at least. The other, where I lost over 50% from the index, had also been fully indexed for the past 3-4 months at least.

Both took a MAJOR hit in traffic on or about Sept 24th. But on Oct 5th, still showed pretty much 100% inclusion in the indexes. Today was the next time I checked, and I'm seeing the loss.

G-dance viewer shows the same numbers, so it's not just a mid-update issue.
