Outgoing links on website - Robots

    Hello all,

I was recently told that having outgoing links on a website is not good. The reason is, if the spider follows that link and finds that website more interesting with fresh content they will not return to finish spidering your website. I have a news and events section towards the top of the homepage with links to articles and trade show event websites.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Webmasters that don't link out to other sites amputate the internet. DON'T BE AFRAID! BUT be wary.

Linking to a more interesting website is what you want. Linking to poor quality sites brings the value of your site down. A good rule of thumb is to link to relevant sites that offer something that you can't or don't. This way your visitor is getting the most out of their experience on your site.

There's also the questions of losing link juice and traffic. If no one linked to other relevant quality sites, then the internet wouldn't work, and there'd be no way for you to share in the juice. Webmasters need to be more willing to link out naturally to sites that deserve it. This spurs the creation of better content, further increasing the value of the internet as a whole. As far as traffic loss is concerned, _blank your links if you're worried about it. If you have a good enough site, you'll get back any traffic you lose because of the added value of your pages and links. Karma rings true in the web world. Just look at this forum!

You can also use rel=nofollow to prevent the spiders from jumping into the other site you linked to.

Outgoing links are fine especially if you are linking to quality sites - this would actually add value to your site in the eyes of your visitors.
