Original site had index.html. New site has index.php. Problem?

I just moved a site onto Wordpress.

I'm using a Wordpress plugin which allows me to keep every page's URL exactly the same as it was on the original site. Every page, that is, except for index.html

The original site had an index.html file, and the new Wordpress site has an index.php file.

On the original site, every page had a link to the home page (the links all went to mysite.com/index.html)

On the new Wordpress site, every page still has a link to the home page, but they all just go to mysite.com/

If I look at Google Analytics for the original site, I can see that both mysite.com/index.html and mysite.com/ get visitors, but mysite.com/index.html gets slightly more.

Is it a problem that the new Wordpress site has an index.php file instead of an index.html file? If yes, is there anything I can do about it?

mmm not really. It might show up differently in your analytics, because Google will still have data for the index.html file.

Wordpress and your server should auto direct any queries for index.html to the home page of your new site.

If you are worried about any direct links that you might be missing out on, you could do a 301 redirect from the index.html page to the root of your website. I even think there is a plug in for it.

    Hi,

To let the search engines know about the change, add this 301 redirect:
    Code:
    Redirect Permanent /index.html http://www.your_site.com/

No a problem as long as you do a 301 redirect.

I'm not a fan of this at all, I never reference the index.html, index.php etc. with my internal linking and always change it to www.mydomain.com.

As for your change from index.html to index.php this should not affect your rankings at all, its just the file extension =)

I have a client that has shifted domains but they have a lot of pages. Is there a tool I can use to create a 301 redirect for every page or do I have to do it by hand?

Or is something like this ok?

    Redirect Permanent http://www.old_site.com/ http://www.new_site.com/
