Is this 'normal' how google lists the sites

For brick-mortar business whose web site is 10 years old when you do a search for [keyword location city] google results page are 7 listings of maps listings/places. The map listings are all brick-mortal business in this particular field (of which there are 4 acutal businesses and 3 not really related). The funny thing is NONE of the actual business has organic listings. Just maps. The organic listings toward the bottom of result page 1 are just spam, yelp, old news articles, etc. The results page has been like this for at least 5 years. Is this normally how google does it?

    Hi JeffMartini13,

Yes, for local search queries, especially for users who are logged in, this is how SERPs are displaying now. Many refer to it as the "Local 7 Pack." It's displaying results from businesses you can find on Google Maps, and yes, sometimes you get locations on the map that aren't exactly the type of business you were looking for.

Those who work actively in local-SEO have observed recently that a business owner doesn't even necessarily need a website anymore to get search engine "traffic" or business. Optimizing for local-SEO is not one of strong suits, but as I understand it, it involves making sure a business is "pinned" properly on Google maps and and the business has a Google+ account. Those 2 things alone could bring a decent amount of exposure in the SERPs for local queries, even without the website.

Business owners who can leverage both - the Local 7 Pack AND an organic listing below are well poised to see steady business leads, conditional to the local demand for the service.

    Hope that helps!
