    Hi Guys

Is there any reason to make the page 404 a noindex, nofollow page? Thanks

No Google will deal with it as soon as it sees the 404 status code.

It will remove it from it's index after approximately 24 hours. But it will check back time to time to make sure its gone...

I guess universo is asking whether the page that the website redirects to when a 404 status is encountered like notfound.html or 404.php etc be made noindex/nofollow?
Else the question does not make much sense, because you cannot make a page, that does not exist or cannot be found, noindex/nofollow.
Regarding the redirection on 404 status to a 404 page, it should better be left index/follow to gather any possible seo benefits from not found pages.
You can even put a search box or links to important sections of the website for better user experience.

If the final page you end up on returns a 200 status ok code that will end up making a "soft 404 error" and that brings up a whole new can of worms....

Make the page 404, with navigation to get back to a known page.. Just as NewDelhiSEO said, No need for a robots tag to make it no follow, no index.

Thanks it makes sense 404 pages must respond 404 and they have to be "index, follow"

    Thanks for the tips!

And the page KnowOneSpecial and Delhi SEO talking about is custom 404 page that is designed for better user experience if the user gets the error of 404 while visiting the website.
