New to SEO / I have a Question

I have a relatively new site, but the domain is not sand boxed because its been indexed for about 6 months and I am getting some keyword hits.

I know that a part of ranking is based on popularity with links, but is it also based on popularity without links?

So if I have a lot of direct traffic and a site that refers a lot of traffic to my site will that help me move up the ranks even if I do not have back links?

Please advise. Thank you

In general, the answer to your question is ... "No"... traffic alone will not help your rankings.

However, that traffic is a key for getting people to know about your site and if you have great content then some of your visitors might have a website that they will link to you. So, traffic can be a key for driving your rankings up through the potential of links.

When I write a new article the first thing that I think about is... "how can I get eyes on this content?"

links

You will not get search engine traffic without links to build up your link popularity

traffic exchange

Joining a traffic exchange will NOT improve your Google ranking.

In fact if you are planning on putting Google Adsense on your site then you can't join a traffic exchange because it's a violation Google Adsense Terms of Service.

Besides, traffic exchanges do not produce anything

"They" say that because it sounds like it is really good and people not in the know will part with money.

Yes you will get more traffic with a traffic exchange program but you will not get any targetted traffic and no more conversions.

Google uses user behaviour date to help rank a site so lots of natural reffering and direct traffic will be benneifical if that traffic spends time on your site and looks at lots of pages. A traffic exchange program will give your site a very high bounce rate which will have a detrimental effect.

ADVICE: DO NOT use traffic exchange programs.
