Author information in search results - Webmaster Tools Help
You use the rel=author tag to indicate that you are the author of the content, and there is a process to verify this too.

Actually, I watched an interview with Eric Schimdt last night where he said that search was imperfect because you search end get a lot of results, Google would like you to search and give you one result - the one you wanted. SPYW, Google+, author verification, personalized search history and associations all help them to do this. Google has an enormous amount of information and can process it very well, I think thats a good thing.
