Is there a solid reason behind this change?

Depends,
If you want to rank in Google.co.uk, then after this server location change try to get inbound links from uk hosted sites.

If Google.com is your target then try to get links from sites hosted different part of the world, not from uk sites only.

If you get many links from UK hosted sites, the rank can be effected

Remember onething, 3 factors are working for Geo Targeting search engine listing.
1. Server Hosting in that Geographical Location

2. Inbound links from sites hosted there

3. Country specific TLD

In your case, if you get links from different part of the world I personally feel, no changes will be there in ranking in Google.co.uk.
