    More backlinks but SERPs dropping

    Hi

    Got a quikie for anyone out there who is well versed with what works on google and what doesnt.

    I have a website that is being optimised by a company and they have a very large forum to which they have added
    links to my site. For example: http://www.webpromotionguru.com/articles/mal9.shtml scroll to the bottom and my site
    is one of those listed there amongst that untidy mess.

    Strange thing is that in 3 weeks google has indexed thousands of their pages and my backlink count has shot into
    thousands as a result. Even stranger is that my SERP is steadily dropping. We went from rank 4 to anywhere between
    33 and 57.

    My question is, does this kind of linking technique do any good, or does google have a filter as a sort of catch for bulk
    link buying. Their forum is not relevant to my site in any way.

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated, i cannot for the life of me think why else my site would be dropping. No recent
    on site work has been done. Each day my backlink count goes up by about 20-30.

    Ta

    If your SEO company's off-site optimization strategy centres soley around loads of links from a forum then IMHO it's time for you to consider ditching them for a more proffesional company especially when you say ;

    Remember that Google aren't the smartest folks on the web but they aren't the dumbest either.

    I agree.

    "Link popularity" means just that: popularity. A web site can be considered more popular (on the World Wide Web) if many other websites link to it, not if a single website adds tons of links to it.
