SEO can only be learned from others who have "been there and done that". If your just starting out you may want to spend some time reading the "site reviews" area of this forum. This will help in preventing you from making the mistakes that other have made. You may also want to read up in the "Search Engine Optimization" and "Google Optimization" areas as well as reading though "Google's WebMasters Guidelines"

Do not be afraid to ask questions here as many are here to help.

Lastly when you make your page consider things in this order.

Layout / Style
Navigation
Usability / Accessibility
and lastly
Search Engines

SEO can be separated into two sections:

- On-page optimization
- Off-page optimization

On-page: literally what's on your pages - ie, content, headings, TITLE tags etc.

Off-page: refers to external links - ie, what sites are linking to you, what anchor text are they using to link to you; and also what sites you link to.

Take advantage of the search function at the top of this website. You'll find hundreds of threads on the subjects.

The Title of your post was MEta tag but it did not ask anything about meta tags.

First bit of SEO advice that will do you well is to forget about meta tags!

thegodfather agrees: Good point. The thread's title had nothing to do with the questions asked.

Definitely NOT. Too far from the real meaning.

This just shows how strong the idea of the Meta Tag is with the general population.

Another reason why those that research are 1000 times ahead of the game. Those who do their own testing are an additional 1000 times ahead of them.

But actually Shouldn't I use Meta Tags on my web pages, should I?

Firstly, META Tags will NOT effect your rankings. That is now fully accepted by the SEO industry (expect for a few people that still won't believe fact)

Secondly, for a long time, whilst this was know it was still considered good practice to include a meta description and meta keyword tag.

Now, several people (myself included) are considering that it is not worth putting meta tags on. I have opted to stop using meta tags now. They offer no practical advantage so IMO, that makes them a waste of time.

There is a whole lot of noise about meta tags but they just simply are not worth borthering with.

Read more about that here.
