It's merely a way for Google to make meaning of synonyms.

You can't really use it to optimize - so in practice you should just ignore it.

The "GIST" of LSI... SEO is also SEM is also search engine optimization, is also search engine marketing, web promotion, online marketing, Internet marketing, search engine ranking or placement or positioning... there isn't "REALLY" any difference... so Google uses LSI (1 way) to help generate search "suggestions"... for search users.

Another set would be PC, computer, desktop, server, laptop, tower, notebook etc.... but they really are the same thing... so Google wishing to expand the search experience by offering other terms that really are the same as they typed... e.g. if say other terms are much more popular.

I use words and terms all the time that are semantically related in my articles. Don't know if it helps, but Google has a great keyword suggester.

For example if I am writing an article about lamps. I will go to Google and enter "~lamp". The tilde brings forth all the keywords Google feels are semantically related.

Perform the above excersize and notice Google has bolded, Bulb, Lighting and lamps.

It's not perfect though, do it again with ~attorney and notice Google feels Texas is semantically related...

Fun to play with? yes! Helpful in the real world? The jury is out

Here's an ok article that if used with many others will give you a good base for your research:
