Low Engagement Social Traffic Impact on User Engagement

I had a blog post go crazy on social media starting in February, most visitors read the post and left. This caused our average session duration to drop dramatically. Could this one post impact how Google views user engagement?

Could that have impacted the site in the latest Google Quality Update? We have seen about a 10% decrease in Google Organic. There are a number of reasons why we could have been affected by that update. I'm just curious if this could have had an impact. Any help is greatly appreciated!

While Google continues to play with User Engagement it is unlikely that this is a negative ranking factor at presence (which seems to be your suggestion) as all other competing pages would need to also "go crazy on social media and to never let up" for you to lose value.

The fact that you never saw the reverse... when things "go crazy on social media" I would have that would have been an enormous increase if this was an existing factor.

In all likelihood something else is involved.

Thank you! I wanted to rule out as many potential factors I could think of. I'm assuming most of my problem lies in thin content. Having an ecommerce site with category pages containing mostly graphics and links to product.

The fact that you never saw the reverse
Do you mean that when a competitor page gets a large amount of low engagement traffic I would have seen an increase? (If that were the case.)
