Lost rankings and traffic that google indexed!

is there any effect on the rankings/traffic if ever we re-write the URL(listings) that was already indexed on Google.

Do you mean changing the URL of an existing page while the page is already indexed? Example, changing domain.com/topic.html to domain.com/topics.html. If so, I suggest you set a 301 redirect (permanent) to the new URL so that Google knows that the page has moved.

exactly! So, would there be a drop of rankings/traffic if I do that?
If I do a 301 redirect for the previous url would there be same result?

No, the result will never be exactly equal to what it was before. You can transfer a large portion of the value of that page, but it will never be 100% the same.

Also you may lose traffic when changing just due to a number of factors

    • tybi : Which factors? The only factor changing is the URL.

If you do 301 then all the value of your previous URL will transfered to the new one,but it will take some time.In the primary stage ranking can be effected, but I would suggest don't worry about that. This is a normal drop in SERP.
Once google recognize your new url, everything will be alright.
    Keep 2 things in mind:
    1. Don't do anything with the content.Just redirect the pages,as it is right now.
    2. for the 301 code, take help from some professionals.A small mistake in the code, can effect you badly.

Here I would disagree... If you do a 301 redirect properly, the only factor which changes is the URL. And as the URL is not a big factor the ranking doesn't change.

It can happen that first your page drops a bit, but after some time everything gets back to normal.

But it can also happen (as it happened to me many times) that for some days both the old and the new URL will be listed in the SERPs, so you see raise in traffic.

Important thing is to do the redirect first, wait till Google recognizes it and then do a content change (if you were planing to do it).
