Linking the main site from a second site

We wish to have a second site concentrating on a very competitive keyword since we are not getting good results for the main site. So we have planned to create a new website with the chosen domain name. It is basically a one page site and content for the keyword that is concentrated. It would also have links which points to pages in the main site. Does keeping those links be considered spam.

You are fine, you have nothing to worry about, it is not a doorway page as it is a separate site.

I would recommend using a seperate IP, and seperate registration info for the site if you really want to get picky.

Vary your content and you will be alright.

    This is fine

Like Seobiznezzy says, use a seperate IP / host and registrar.
I would advise against recpricoal linking.

You will of course face the sandbox if it is a new site and domain which might defeat the object a little bit.
There may be a reason why your established site doesn't rank. It might be worth addressing that first as you will have quicker results than waiting for your new site to come out of the sandbox.

Oh thank you both I was worried it would be spam. And also reminded of the sandbox effect too. Yes I would advice them to use separate ip and registration

    One Page Web Sites

The chance of any one page site doing well for any search term is very poor. You need many page reinforcing the authority of the theme (key word phrase) that you are targeting.
