Don't take offence! But please tell me if this is kind of close to a piece of link bait for SEO chat. Also, feel free to add to it. I would love to see your ideas.

I may have the wrong Idea though I'm new to this link bait stuff. Please let me know.

Sounds like the same promise 10,000+ other websites make. The whole concept of link baiting is to provide something that no one can find anywhere else and be of entertainment or interest to a very large group of people. Unique & quality are to main factors in link baiting in my opinion.

I have heard the term slate as many groups as possible. Be controversial and also contrary. Maybe I need to be interesting? Can you give an example?

Well, I wrote an article about link baiting on my SEO knowledge database, I don't want to be dropping links in threads being new to this specific community so I'll just say it's located in the "link development" section of my SEO knowledge database found in my signature. It's called "What is Link Baiting".

I don't know if it will give you the "example" your looking for, however it will give you an idea of link baiting and the different type of hooks you can use.

Here are 5 common 'dumb down' linkbait versions.
1. A public domain database

2. Some type of calculator to ease brain-function

3. Satire entertainment

4. Time sensitive information

5. Controversial

The scope of each are easy to define... whenever someone has a question where the answer is difficult to find or explain... a free database tends to get "try here!"

I wish I could figure this out... "try this!"

Take a look at this... "hilarious!"

FREE TICKETS "while quantities last!"

Man this is such "BULLSH.IT!"

The point of linkbait is to build something that people will want to link to.

Your statement is nothing worth linking to.

Write something that people want to share with others, not a generic statement that's been used a billion times.

Link baiting usually has something extra than just a web page to attract visitors.

Ie signup to my newsletter and get my e-book.

Then there is a true link bait where a free product or service is offered.

It could be a search engine spider simulator or some other tool that is useful to people in general. This is the "bait" to ge the link that you desire.
