    Latest SEO Test


    Here are the results of my latest SEO test. Sorry if it dosent make much sense or has bad spelling, i'm in a bit of a rush to finish other projects.

    Method:
    A directory was created with an index.html containg plain links to each file with keyword unrelated-anchor text (except where that was being tested).

    13 on-page optimization test pages and 10 keyword density pages were created.

    Two inbound links were created just long enough for Google to pick up the pages, then removed to avoid PageRank interference.

    A random string of words ran together was used as the keyword. Onpage and KD tests used diffrent target keywords.

    Onpage test pages:
    Keyword in filename, 1 line of random text in body
    Plain text keyword in body
    Keyword in title, 1 line of random text in body
    Keyword in H1
    Keyword in H2
    Keyword in H3
    Keyword in H4
    Keyword in H5
    Keyword in H6
    Keyword in bold
    Keyword in italics
    Keyword only in anchortext from index.html
    Single outbound link to www.[keyword].com

    Keyword density tests:
    1%
    2%
    3%
    4%
    5%
    6%
    7%
    8%
    9%
    100%


    And now what you've all been waiting for... how google ranked them:
    1. Title
    2. Filename
    3. Italics
    4. Bold
    The rest did not appear in the SERP.

    KD:
    8%
    5%
    3%
    The rest did not appear in the SERP.


    And just for the heck of it, Yahoo:
    1. Title
    2. The index.html page (!)

    Yahoo KD:
    1. 8%
    2. 6%

    Alltheweb didn't appear to pick up the pages.

    This is excellent - I just knew filename would do something (as my domain is not a KW at all)

    Just to clarify, does the KW density include all the meta tags or jus t text on the page ?

    Ooops. Forgot to mention that.

    None of the pages had any meta tags. Each page did have a title that made it easier for me to tell them apart in the SERPs, obviously except for the title keyword page which consisted only of the keyword.

    are you saying that 4% , 6% and 7% KWD did not show up in the serps?

    Thanks symetrix. This can be a good proof for a guy that was pissing me off that my keyword density was about %6 and that's why I was ranking down in Google. He was thinking that Google hates high kd ( %6 was high for him ).

    Nice to share this with us. Keep us informed on new tests you may perform in the future

    Great post symetrix. Glad you shared it with us. Guys just take note that there are many factors when it comes to the Google and Yahoo algo. Only a few factors was tested here and in NO way is symetrix claiming that these factors will make you rank high! What interest me most is that any of these fators are still at play! I am shocked that italic and bold still is factors!

    I thought it was odd too. And Google is displaying the rest of the results today in the SERPs. Boy do I feel stupid for being in a hurry and posting when the first results showed up.

    Anyway, here are the new and improved results. I have the feeling that they will fluxuate and continue to change:

    1. Title
    2. Filename
    3. Italics
    4. Bold
    5. Plain Text
    6. The Index page

    Another poster asked for a link to the SERPs. This isn't something i'm going to release because I don't want any external factors affecting the results (Inbound links, click tracking, etc). If anyone challenges the validity of my results, I would be more than happy to send the info to a moderator for independant validation. Or you could just take my word for it.

    Very interesting and thanks for the update...

    I believe you're right, they will fluctuate further and I would expect <b> to end up ahead of <i> eventually.

    The keyword density is interesting, obviously 100% was not well received but otherwise - the more the merrier...
    It would be interesting to see this repeated at 10,15,20,25,20,25,40 %... etc etc to see when the "bar" kicks in

    Very useful but not to put test down was this for competitive keywords or not cause for non competitve words the test would not mean as much no?

    In Webby's London Conference report post he said that Google is now considering low density keyword pages, recommending a density of 2-3%.

    I guess this proves that wrong. I'm glad I have a 13% density on mine

    These are all NEW pages? I wonder how long these results would hold up, if they aren't changed, over the next 30-60 days. I think test like this are interesting but I don't think they are forward looking and I'm reluctant to put much weight in them.

    I see a site ranking (not mine) at #2 (out of 340k) for a single keyword and it's not used in the title, description, headings, bold, or italic and has a density of .91 for that kw. Agian, I think tests like this are interesting but thats about it. Is there anyone out there that has some long term tests they have performed that may support these findings?
