Keyword research for really fresh queries?

How do you guys do keyword research for really fresh queries? Let's say for example that you had a blog about green widgets. And two days ago there was a recall for a certain brand of green widgets.

You're now writing a blog post about this recall and trying to decide how to best craft your title and write the post (i.e. which parts of the recall you want to focus on.)

The Adwords keyword tool isn't going to tell me about fresh keywords like this (as no one was searching for green widget recall issues until 2 days ago). I can't seem to get anything out of Google Trends either.

I suppose I could look at forum posts and see how people are wording their questions, like "Hey, did you hear about the recall on green widgets?", or "Are green widgets now unsafe?", or "Green widgets found to contain cyanide!"

Just wondering if you guys have any thoughts on how to do keyword research for fresh news stories like this.

    Green
    Widget
    recall

Wouldn't that be your keywords? if targeted that way it shouldn't matter how you title your blog/post/article.

In this case...I like to just give the facts..."Recall on Green Widgets" and then add the rest in the blog, is it un safe, have you heard. But that just me.

Not necessarily. I have found that some of my best posts (in regards to traffic) have been ones where I could more accurately target what people are searching for. If it's a new news story there are hundreds of news outlets that are targetting "Green Widget Recall", but if I get it right in regards to what people are searching for then I can often hit the jackpot with something like,

    "Green widgets killing dogs?"
    "Are green widgets safe?"
    "Do green widgets contain lead?"

Lets say you have an animal safety type site, you should already be optimized for dogs, cats, goats, killing dogs, animal safety, poisons that affect animals. Now this Green widget comes along and it's all new to your site, (key word wise) I'd think you only need to target whats new.
    Green
    Widgets
and maybe- recall (if it hasn't previously been targeted)
instead of exact match phrases, that content in my view belongs in the article.

    This may help. keywords

    * Go to Google Insights for Search http://www.google.com/insights/search/

    * Enter your search term/s ( for example: term selected from Google Hot Trends for the day )

    * Adjust your date range in the Google Insights for search to Last 7 days & Click Search button

    * Scroll Down to the bottom of the insights results till you find the Rising Searches / Breakout Terms for the semantic variations of the root trending term/s

Hope this helps. All the best.

    • Dr.Marie → agrees: Thanks! That's what I was looking for. Was trying to use Google Trends, but it was insights I actually wanted.
