Keyword density: On the total number of words or just unique words?

I'm noticing that under total words my keyword density is about 2-2.5%,
but under unique and over 3 character words it jumps to 10%.

Which one should I /do you SEO for?
Also, do the keywords on the META tag count towards the %?

    thanks,

Depending on which search engine you are targeting, will dictate the answer to the question...

IMO, I do not spend that much time focusing on KW density, other then making sure my keywords are present in the appropriate places on the page.

Now a days, Content+Links are very powerful ways to achieve rankings on Google, and even some of the other engines places 'some' emphasis on link building and good, fresh, relevant content.....

Personally - I aim for 2-10% KW DENSITY, so I cover all the engines and their preferences..

    Cheers

That's a really good advice critter, but only if he is targetting Google!
If you are interested in targetting Yahoo and the new MSN, you should have some care about you KW density.

I think for Yahoo it is calculated per total words. But i am not really sure.
