Is URL rewriting necessary anymore?
I read that in the early days search engines had trouble with querystring parameters, but that that was no longer true with the big search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN.) Is this true?
Do I really need to make sure that mypage.asp?var1=test1&var2=test2&var3=test3....
is mypage.asp/test1/test2/test3/...?
I know the second looks nicer, is more memorable, hackable, etc., but does it matter for SEO for a search engine's ability to index a website? I sure see a lot of ugly URLs in Google's page results.
By that last question I mean that I understand backlinking, etc. plays a part, but setting that aside, can the search engine index "ugly URLs"? Should not having a "pretty URL" keep me from launching a site?

If your URL is containg query strings and special symbols it may take lot of time to get index even if it is already index then it may take lot of time to re-index. better to go for URL re-writing.

Does anyone have a definitive resource on this (no offense, no one sounded too sure)?

Thats because its bollox.
Google reads dynamic urls fine, it juts doesnt sattribte goosd pagerank top them though, so the issue isnt the target page, but the intermidiate pages in the site.
On a site url rewrite your category and home pages and you bottom level.product pages will rank better, be picked up quicker and be spidered more often.
Bottom level pages aren't as important to rewrite, as they are not need to pass link strength/page rank.
To my mind the main reason to url rewirte is to make sure you spread your link strength around your site well.
URLS without session ids and that mumbo jumbo are still favoured. Yes they can review and view long links but it's still more efficient to have clean and clear.
