Is this google dance
Hello Everyone,
I am not a SEO professional, but I have a decent good understanding of it. My keywords are very competitive and I am primarily targeting cities. keyword + City. As of yet my page is a PR3 and for the few cities that I have targeted I am able to rank on the first page with all major search engines. My homepage is optimized for a certain city and for the longest I have been ranked 4th. After some elbow Greece and some more back links, I took first place. However it does not stick. For the last 4 or 5 weeks my listing has been bouncing from position 4 to 1 and back to 4. Is this google dance? I have seen some google dance effects before, but they never lasted that long. Also I have noticed a pattern. Friday - Sunday I get position 1, then Monday to -Thursday I get bumped back to 4th position. Is this a natural google process or is my competitor manipulating the rankings?
As a note, my competitor, has page rank1 and very few backlinks if any. The only advantage they have is the keyword as the domain.

I appreciate any thoughts and feedback.

If your competitors are doing no SEO, have no PR and show no signs of optimization then I would just put this down as something Google's doing.
I think you should only be worried if you go below the norm (for you).
Also, something I noticed. If you login with a Google Account and then start searching over and over and clicking on a certain website (yours) it seems to go higher in the SERPs.
I know this isn't organic! It's something to do with Google preferences on your searches or something?
ATTENTION THOUGH: This is on the basis of something thats happened to me a couple of times, I have NO idea if this is correct.

Its the google doing the waltz or the truffle shuffle
Seriously though without seeing the sites to compare , it will all be guesswork , how about putting your domain up not as a link but as
www dot my domain do co dot uk
so we can see what the site is and what efforts have went into it !

I think that if you had used "elbow grease" instead of "elbow Greece", it would have worked better
Google Dance does not exist anymore, but some continue to use that name for the quaterly (or so) PR update. I've never seen a PR update affecting my ranking, although on very competitive keywords, SERPs may vary according to which Data Center answers your query, as all DCs are not necessarily aligned.
It is also possible, as suggested by DanJH, that it is caused by search history and whether or not you are connected to your Google account.

Phew, I avoided getting fathom'd (when he reads the thread) !
I also noticed the greece / grease confusion
The thing I was referring to earlier is deadly. I searched my keywords a lot that day and near the end of the day I saw our website was ranked #5! Then I noticed the link was purple and I was logged into my Google Account. Logged out, cleared my cookies and there I was, back on page two.

Oh... sorry about the Greece mistake Gyros anyone
I never search when logged in. I also tried from different location, office at home,etc...
actually I checked this morning when I got up and it was back to 1 st position, now it's back to 4th. I have tired in intervals to see if it would jump back this morning to 1st position, but it has not. Most likely it will jump back tomorrow. I do remember one thing that could have an impact. I am having a new site developed and some services have been removed from the old site. Now some indexed links go it to limbo.

Yep and since last night, I am back to first position #1.
I know that one competitor employs an SEO firm from india, not sure if the others are doing much on a frequent basis. I will keep an eye on it and wait and see what happens. Thanks to all for the input.

What Is A Google Dance?
The name "Google Dance" is often used to describe the index update of the Google search engine.
Google's index update occurs on average once per month. It can be identified by significant movement in search results and especially by Google's cache of all indexed pages reflecting the status of Google's last spidering.
But the update does not proceed as a switch from one index to another at one point in time.
In fact, it takes several days to complete the index update. During this period, the old and the new index alternate on www.google.com.
At an early stage, the results from the new index occur sporadically.
But later on, they appear more frequently. Google dances.
Man wat a load of crap your talking , you get this info from some old book 7 years ago or something !
Did you not read the other posts on this thread !
Google Dance is an outdated term , it no longer is used so please do not fool people into believing it does still exsist !
