    Interesting scenario re:Linkbuilding and rankings

We have a site that is doing remarkably well for a quite competitive keyword. It is probably doing better than it should do because the product we have is probably one of the best in the market and some important influencers have highlighted the product and linked to it.

Presumably through a couple of super-strong links on super-high traffic sites we hit page one about a month ago which was great...about two weeks after this we started noticing a big increase in backlinks being flagged up by Majestic.

At first we thought it was secondary links based on the two great link we acquired, when we looking into it, however, these are spammy robot generated backlinks. Lots of comment spam on numerous low quality, utterly irrelevant site. Obvious no-one involved with the product has done this...we don't need to.

The only thing that makes sense is that a competitor has paid to generate 1000s of backlinks in an effort to get our site penalised.

As of yet we have seen no ill-effects...because all these links are pretty much identical and following the exact same pattern we have taken the decision to submit disavow files every week just to distance ourselves from the spam.

First time we have experienced attempted sabotage like this, has anyone else?

I have heard of the "tactic" before.

It should be illegal - just as irl sabotage, since you can really hurt someones business.

As stated above, you should keep an eye of what kind of links you got, and disavow all the shady ones.

The web is full of robots scraping content and creating backlinks for all manner of reasons.

G will know this better than you or me.

My inclination would be to watch your referral traffic like a hawk but to nothing until/unless you see a negative impact.

G is pretty good at ignoring the "squillions" robot generated links.

The robot scraping volume is at such a high level that blaming a competitor for negative SEO is to me, the least likely cause of your so far, non-existent problem.

    Keep watching for changes!

If he discovers any shady links from sites that you on no circumstances would like to get links from (you know what kind of links), he should disavow them instantly.
