Importance of Googles PageRank??

Hi Guys,

How important is getting a high ranking on googles PageRank tool on the Google toolbar? We've been working on promoting our site by linking to some quality sites and optimising our site but in the last week for some reason which to be honest I'm not completely sure of yet our traffic has gone up by 50%, our google rank is way up, even higher than some of the biggest in our industry and even our Alexa traffic number has jumped way up or down as it reads. So obviously we're really happy especially since we're just about to launch our completely redesigned and optimised site but I guess I'm just wondering am I getting too happy about the high ranking and how important is it really??
Also I've read a lot of posts about having a PageRank of 5 and 6, how can you tell what number it is at? All I can see is a little green bar graph??

Thanks

it's part of the formula.

Basically this is what I do and it works (cause I get top 10 on most keywords I want and this is with pages with either grey bar (yes I have sites that are grey bared and get searches daily ) or 5 or under PR)

Title is the top 2 keywords

H1 tag of the title at the top.

Then check the keyword density. Get over 8% on the top 2 keywords you have (most of the time, depends on the amount of competition you might need more, try not to go over 12%).

Thanks...

mlm,

On the tool you listed above what fields need to be what percent for best results. Reason I ask is that the tool looks really helpfull and I figured you have probably figured it out on how it works best.

All tips are welcomed and great post on the tool!

Kind Regards,

As you can see from my rating I'm "learning the ropes"

But I have concentrated on the percentage the most. I try to put keywords in the images where I think they are relevent; i.e., alt tags. Also, from reading on this board and the advice people have given me from this board, H1 tags are pretty important. You can use css to change the look of them.

thanks,
MLM

Sorry, to be a little more specific, I am targeting the keywords: "study abroad". So I make these two words the highest concentration.

Yes... and a quick search with overture tool brings back

14784 study abroad
4248 study abroad program
1727 study abroad scholarship
1139 study spanish abroad
697 summer study abroad

x term, searches per month, so that's a good one and also study abroad program if that's related to your sites content.

Then check it with
http://www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/kwda.cgi

Then if you don't already have backlinks start getting some from some highly ranked sites (pr) and get traffic.

It's not only google , its also yahoo....that is showing the same now..
Having a high PR will give you a higher ranking ABOVE other websites
found with the same search query who have a lower PR !!!!!

The use of a website is getting visitors to see your work !!
And because google, yahoo...(and who knows more in the future)
are using this database it could be important enough to get your
PR up in order to get the maximum number of visitors possible
from Google and Yahoo...

regards, hans

I only partialy agree with this statement:

"Having a high PR will give you a higher ranking ABOVE other websites
found with the same search query who have a lower PR !!!!!"

This is true if and only if the relavence of the page to the search is equal for the two pages.

I have a number of pages that rank far higher in the SERPs than the higher PR pages returned in the SERPs.

Cheers,

Bear is right, it isn't just page rank. A good general formula:
page rank x page optimization = placement

You can't focus on just on just one aspect and get results. Remember basic math (Google loves math) - anything times zero = zero. The higher both sides of the equation, the higher the answer (or serp).
