Im nervous about paid links & reciprocal links

I know I am brand new to SEO, but I am very nervous about paid links & reciprocal links for a fear of linking to the wrong one and getting banned

I havent even really started link building yet until I have sufficient research to help ensure I don't screw anything up!

I know from doing research on what is coming up in Google right now for my target keywords (Boston R___ E___), many of these websites have link trade partners across America with other real estate agencies, even though Hawaii real estate agency has nothing to do with Boston condos.

For instance, there's this guy b ushari.com who comes up high and trades with 1000's of real estate agencies across America. Right now, he's at the top in many keywords, however --- my concern is that Google might catch on that oregon real estate and boston real estate agencies are different and kick him off

What do you guys think of this???

Here is a beginning for your answer

I'm also relatively new in SEO AND in the R.E field too...

I've been doing link building for some time know with my website and from the many reading I've done one thing is sure for me:
    - creating links won't hurt you, even to non-related website. One exception, this is not true if it is to spammy website (that's obvious). Moreover, the following can happen: imagine you link to a so-so website, but with a good PR. If google finds irrelevant and lowers it PR, then BAM it hurts you too... Note that this has to do with the weight this website has compared to all backlinks to your website.

Now for the latter part of your question... I'm unsure whether or not google will actually penalize it. That might depend on the content of the website... if it is irrelevant with the keyword, GG might eventually decrease its ranking...

I would recommend to keep away/ be extremely careful about link exchnages. Link buying is better, but make sure that the site you buy links from, doesnt sell too many links and to differnt categories. It is easy to say that you should not do any of these, but of you really want to rank high you may need little bit of both.

Think of the links your visitor would actuallyw ant to see going from your website, and link there. Build great content and you will attract naturally relevant links from webmasters trying to do the same.

It sounds redundant but I have been doing this a long time, no quick fix will beat the long term benefits of natural, authorative site building and linking.

You don't NEED paid links to get a high rank.

There is no substitute for Hard Work.
Submit to as many free directories as possible.
    Submit articles to article directories.
    Start a blog
Comment on blogs (relevant categories only)

Recips are GOOD if they are back & forth between sites that carry same key words (relevancy).

Have you thought about filming a Virtual Tour of your Boston Condos and showing them on YOU TUBE? You Tube links carry a very high PR value, from what I've seen.

    Build Links!!

Don't be afraid as djmc said RECIP are fine as long as they are from relevant sites. Build and build links all kinds!

Think of it this way: What is good for your visitors? If it's good for your visitors it's good for SEO. Obviously on my computer site a link to motorcycle repair would have no value to my visitors, BUT a link to cheap laptop batteries DOES!!

Here is a simple formula on how to divide your time when working on a link campaign:

    50% - Relevant Link Exchange/Blogroll (one-ways if possible)
40% - Articles Marketing (best source of one way links)
    10% - Directory Submission

Follow that and you will be fine!

    Good Luck!

Interesting, but this might not help... try to get 100% natural back links.

Dino, you're not that new to SEO. SEO is still in it's infancy. After having spent so much time on this forum in the last 6-9 months, you're practically a veteran when it comes to SEO research (so long as you've been reading as well as posting.)

You're problem lies in that you haven't begun link building. What are you afraid of? It seems that you're hesitant to begin because you only want to do it if it's black hat. Why not just start writing good content, promote it, and get in touch with some webmaster that aren't looking for a pay out? Forget the paid links, otherwise you'll spend another year of your life wasted in procrasturbation. Start with reciprocals if you must, but just START!!

I believe I've written this before: If you spent half of your time writing content and emailing/calling webmasters for links as you do trying to find the magical golden key to easy seo, you'd be staring down at your competitors from your de-luxe Boston condo in the sky.
