I would prefer a different page on my site show up for a certain keyword
Hi there,
i've been managing the SEO on a site for a while and have recently modified a page within my site to be optimized for a certain keyword.
However, my homepage is the page coming up for that search term in Google. My homepage is not optimized for that particular keyword, although it does appear in the title tag and text content.
I would much prefer having this other page be the page which google indexes for this particular keyword. How does one go about getting a different page ranked for a keyword.
Do I need to get Google remove the homepage from their index? I'd rather not as the homepage is meant to be targeting other keywords.

Get links into the page that you want to rank.
Double check its optimization.

If google rechecks this other page and see's it is optimized more for the keyword I am dealing with, will it ever swap the page i want in and swap the homepage out?

I know what you're talking about - I have faced the same situation before. The only thing you can do is to promote this other page you want to rank for the keyword by getting mor ebacklinks internally and externally. Link to this page from the main page (which ranks) and make sure you use that keyword phrase as the anchor text. Try to build backlinks using the anchor text to this other page you want ranked. Dont ever make the mistake of removing the home page from the index. Then you wont be able to get it ranked again. Only competitor pages will move up to fill the place of home page.

It won't swap out unless you get rid of the targeted keyword links to your home. I'm sure if you put a bunch of effort into promoting your inner page, you'll find that Google will show both results next to each other soon enough. Don't swap, instead add.
