I need help me target my audience
Hi all,
I could use a bit of help on how to target my audience for OurDesktops.com. I know who they are and where they are but I don't know the right way to get to them. For example - I put $100.00 into a Google AdSense search campaign. That lasted about a couple of days and most people came from the keywords "desktop images". From what I can see, I didn't get any conversion. This makes me think I was targeting the wrong people with the wrong keywords. Another example - $30.00 in a StumbleUpon campaign. That lasted just a few hours - lol! Tons of traffic, but as I expected, minimal viewing time (< 45 seconds). Probably a bad idea. I know there's an audience for my site because a few forums that I posted to (without looking too spammy) has generated the members I have right now, ~50. I don't mind putting more resources into advertising but I don't want to do it wastefully. How can I better advertise this site? Thank you! |

A little bit more info:
It's too early in the game to invest a lot of advertising money (1k+) so I'm looking at $1-200 to start. My goal is to get another 50-100 members. |

Im assuming your website does not really relate to any keyword searches as of now, as it is a relatively new concept you have there in terms of an actual website theme. Although once your site takes off i'm sure that'll change.
I would suggest you concentrate on purely referral traffic from topically relevant social bookmarking, web sites.forums, blogs etc. As I don't believe you will see the require conversions in PPC because I doubt people's keyword searches will relate enough to your website theme. |

I think you hit the nail on the head. The problem with getting my site out there, is that I don't see it as something you hit a search engine for. Typically, people will just post in the forums they frequent with the thread: "Show your [current month] Desktop". This is my challenge. |

I really think you should stop throwing money away on paid advertising and focus on your SEO for a while

I agree. No more money will be spent right now. I'll focus on SEO and of course, the site content, and its users. |

From your domain name I think you're in PC computer sales... because I doubt more than 1 in 1000 people will pay for wallpaper, icon themes when they can get them for free.
Do-it-yourself SEO isn't cheap neither. If you have 8 hours a day dedicated to learn... that's about 6 weeks... and then you still got rank your site... so that's another month of a year... and we can assume someone is paying you to do this [your disposible time after your day job, wife & kids time, and your personal "I don't wantta work time] so you learning curve tends to be much longer than 6 weeks. I'm always amazed at people that will NEVER hire a "learn-as-you-go-person" to get the job done... because of the likely poor results the will be the outcome... but will hire themselves to do that very thing and expect different results.

As I can see, Your domain is very New:
Results for ourdesktops.com : Domain Created on: September 07 2008 Domain age (approximately): 0 Months, 22 days. Just 22 days old.. Its nice that you are trying your hands on PPC, however, with such a fresh site and with such a service, You could have adjusted the website to basic SEO Requirements.. I cannot see relevant Title Tags on the pages. Most of the landing pages do not have as much content as they desire to attract visitors/links. The site look s all natural but not tweaked as required for SEO.. In my opinion you should try on with Organic SEO and capitalise the benefit from the site being so new, as google gives a new website boost effect. Along with that, Opt in for PPC campaigns but DO check the keywords you target 10 times. Getting traffic is one thing, and converting them to sales is another. Its all a game of keywords, u c..?! Umm perhaps this , to me seems like a case of redirect.. Is www.mailexpresso.com your website too?>????? http://copyscape.com/view.php?o=37319&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mailexpresso.com%2Fdefault.aspx &t=1222750436&s=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ourdesktops.com&w=27&c=1 Well here are a few channels I think could do the job for you..: 1. Your Items to sell are such that you can have a high audience levels at Digg 2. Stumble Upon, .. Hmm Instead of paid ads there, write up a content, links clinching content, and then see it get stumbled all over and then getting those massive links and traffic, conversions would still depend on what you offer on the website and the levels of discounts 3. Adwords being another option for you, however, make sure you use proper landing pages and Keywords ofcourse. 4. Being a new website, you can opt in for a viral marketing campaign, your products are versatile enough, and perhaps stuff for free is quite possible to gather status.. 5. Above all, Start to build links for the website. Most of the links are from Forums right now and sitewide.. which google devalues.. Joining all and drawing a bottomline: You need to do Organic SEO Along with the Paid options just because, organic SEO and SERPS will ensure long term SERPS.. while paid are just Pay to Play!! which requires Risk Management!
