Good video and worth watching. Matt is right about the long-term strategy for building a site. Makes sense from a business perspective as well as an SEO perspective. I'm also a big proponent of submitting spam reports via webmaster tools. I've seen it work.
The discouraging part is his apparent position that spam will always be around. I guess that's an obvious fact, but not encouraging to hear. The attitude I got from the video is hey, we can only go after spam when it's concentrated in one area and is large enough to hit our radar. I guess it's like law enforcement and drugs - only enough resources to go after the major offenders.
But it's a scalable algorithm, not more cops on the street. I see some really obvious stuff and wonder why a building full of PhDs can't stop it. It's not 2003 any more - the viagra spam should be long gone and the more subtle spam should be attacked head-on, across the entire web, not in certain hot spots.
In the meantime, I continue work on the long-term strategy.
