Some more addition here.
If you recently changed your site to different Hosting company: but only shot period.
Check your website content some times you may dropped just because of duplicate content.
Some time you change your page title this is single most effective on page factor for raking.
Always use search engine webmaster tool resources

By the way I heard that the sandbox effect will last longer for sites that acquire links too quickly.

A vague assumption... since link quality out performs link quantity it only makes sense that your statement isn't accurate.
If you can get 1 link a month that has more link juice than 10,000 seems the number of links isn't a major factor.
