    https vs pagespeed

    Hello

I am hoping someone can help me because I have literally spent hours trying to work out what is best and I am confused as hell as I keep reading conflicting advise.

My current situation is that my site loads in 2.9s with http but with https the site loads in 6.1s

But I have read that Google prefers https as opposed to http and will give a boost for sites that use https but I have also read that Google loves sites that load fast. So if I have to chose between fast http and slow https which is the better choice for seo with Google please?

I also see that a lot of people are saying that https makes their site load faster than http which certainly isn't the case in my instance but also that wouldn't make any sense because surely https would be an extra step to process so logically https should always be even a little bit slower than http?

Can anyone please unravel the mystery with this and tell me which choice to make and or why a SSL cert should slow the site down by nearly 4 seconds meaning does that sound normal?

    Many Thanks

    Rab

    Hi Rab,
At present there is a very small and fixed Google ranking boost for https web pages. It is so small as to be virtually unidentifiable in the 200+ G. ranking factors that can be of variable magnitude.

It is similar with page load speed. At present G only applies a small, fixed page ranking boost if people search on mobile devices. It can apply a ranking penalty with VERY slow load speeds. A minute or more has been mentioned as a penalty generating rate.

Be aware that G is working on a major change from its desktop based indexing system to a new mobile version. We do not know what changes will result when that is implemented.

I don't know how you are measuring the load speeds you report above. In the real world, load speed is totally different for every single web user. It will vary based on the location of the page viewer, the time of day, day of week, month of year. The type of device and browser used to access a page will also impact on real load speeds.

Also bear in mind that a SE's primary task is to find relevant info. Load speed does not help this task at all!

I don't know where we will end up with load speed as a G. ranking factor. I think G is trying to side-step the speed issue by scraping so many quick snippet answers from out websites.

    Hi John

Thanks for such as quick and informative reply.

I always make my sites as fast as I possibly can and this has become even more important now all my sites are exclusively responsive and as you say there is a small benefit in SEO terms for Google but of course we all know that if a site takes it's time loading the visitor will go elsewhere which therefore effects the bounce rate for the site.

Just after I posted this question I was able to figure out why my https had a 4 second load delay turns out Joomla core was at fault they have a option to force SSL across the entire site which I had enabled and for some reason whatever way they do this murdered the load speed I know it wasn't via htaccess so I disabled the option on Joomla and set a redirect in htaccess and now whole site is running on / redirecting to https and only added 6ms to overall pagespeed load so I am happy with that. Although will never understand how some people out there on the internet believe their site is faster over https than http because as I said in OP there is a extra step maybe it's with http2 but that's another can of worms entirely and a problem for another day.

    Thanks again John.

    Many Thanks

    Rab

I completely agree with John on this! Google is not offering a significant rankings boost for HTTPS websites as of yet, which means I would focus on making your HTTP site as quick as possible.

There are a number of ways you can do this, one of the main ones is to use Google's page speed tool... PageSpeed Insights

    I hope this helps.

An example I can give you is that the following site, advanceditservices.co.uk used to load in just under 10 seconds, now it loads in just under 5 and I am still improving it! Waiting to see the rankings boost when the site has been completely optimised!
