We have been doing the http to https redirect for our official website of Radon Media as well as SEO clients. There's a fluctuation in the rankings at initial days and dropped few positions but after some days those keywords are gained their positions again and now are stable. Also the average positions are improved.

I have every one of my sites not only SSL encrypted, additionally proxied and cached with CloudFlare using 2 way encryption via apache config file access. It's literally not going to do anything for you in terms of seeing any rank increase but if you don't have it, your SEO can be DEVASTATED!

I've had multiple occurrences with non secure http sites triggering the malware flag fire off simply because I attempted to log into WordPress admin. Triggering this ugly red screen on a live page that gets lots of traffic is BAD NEWS!!! Additionally, as a former Kali linux user, I can tell you firsthand it's a VERY dangerous world out there! Especially when the potential for XSS session hijackings, and all manner of evil is available.

Simply Forcing SSL tremendously minimizes a lot of potential problems. Furthermore, CloudFlare provides minified HTML/CSS/JS and caches your entire site for super fast load times! Fast and Secure, you can't beat it!

    Thumbs down

Of course, it does make a difference.
Google strives to make the online experience of its visitors a good one and as HTTPS-URLs are more secured and trusted, hence, Google prefer HTTPS-URLs over HTTP-URLs.

Also, it has been officially announced by Google that switching to HTTPS gives a slight uplift to the ranking. So, Switching to HTTPS puts you in Google's good books.
Although, having HTTPS-URLS is not regarded as powerfull as other ranking factor like content quality but, it surely gives you an edge over HTTP-URLs.

From my experience, it doesn't really help. but it's definitely good to have, since you can get SSL certs for free and they are easy to implement.

I switched to https recently and I noticed that there is not negative or positive impact, and also https has an advantage over http because google will consider sites with https less than those with no ssl.

How can google place a penalty either in ranking or implying that a website is insecure when the website is pure brochure-ware in nature and has no user interaction apart from normal navigation. Seems like they are simply acting as a law unto themselves, or is there truly good reasoning with this.
