its called serp refresh mate.

and it's quite common.

the reason those top 3 don't move much, because they are all engaging in seo all the time, they are all building quality backlinks, making new content and more.

this is how they secure such a stable ranking.

the reason you keep moving around, is because your competitors are doing more seo then you are at the moment. thus when there site cache's are updated, they are placed either higher or lower in the serps, thus affecting your standing rank.

the solution to this would be that you, study these forums here like your life depends on it, and apply some real advanced seo to your site and show your competitors who's boss

The top three sites are providing new fresh contents frequently as well as they are focussing to get quality backlinks which is helping them to stay in top three positions. You also follow the same procedure , you will also ensure stable positions.

Thats gr8 that you are very keen about the ranking for your website..

As of top 3 sites.. concern... they are giving more intention to their work as compare to you and of course more quality and quantity..

If you wanna beat them you have to run the campaign in double speed from them..
in terms of link building :- collect quality back links for your website... like get links from relevant content rich site.. . do one way link building campaign ( no external links from your site) get links from .. forums, blogs, article syndicate, press release. social Bookmarketing etc.. also keep your eye on nofollow tag... if you got link and that link have nofollow attribute.. then that link will not give you any value..

in terms of seo:- make your title tag / meta tags unique, adding keywords in the tags, on which u want to make the site top.. and but dont use as spam.. make it in natural way.

also add other tags like alt tags. title tags in the body of the site.,. Body content must be related to the keywords on which you want to on top.. in the SERP's
Internal linking of your site should be proper so that SE crawler crawls your site in proper way..

You can add your target keywords as heading with heading tags (h1,h2,h3...)

One more thing.. Keep eye on top 3 sites.. study and analysis them whts they doing to maintain that position..

all the above points will help your website to get on top..
Best of luck and Rest leave on Google GOD :p

Keep adding efforts on your website.. soon you will get the results.. positive efforts never fails..

If i am wrong and missed some points please share it so that he can able to beat their competitors.

Thanks
Pws

Its hard to comment as we don't know which search terms you are finding that sites do not move in the top 3.

I have sites in the top 3 for many keywords, and trust me they do move! There are no guaranteed safe spots.

One important factor is how long your site has been around. if your site is relatively new in the eyes of Google, it is very normal to see the fluctuations. Google has more confidence in sites that have been around longer. Also, the history of backlinks can also play an important role in rankings. It is fair to assume that sites that have been around longer may have links that have been around longer than yours.

I agree what has been said here - solid backlinks are your key to top long-lasting rankings. It takes time and patience.
