How shuld I build links to my site?

Ok, here is the deal...

I have one website which I am promoting a product on... the site is in 5 languages... its main page is only containing a small description in english and links to all of the subpages/languages...

Now, shuld I get i.e. 5 links to my main page so it "splits" the link value over the subpages (it is the subpages Im optimizing, not the main page) or shuld I get one link for each language?

I know it would be best if I could get a link for each page in its language, but right now I only have access to english links...

So shuld I send all the links to the main page or send it to different subpages?

Thanks!

:EDIT:

Oh, forgot to say:

Every subpage got a link to the other 4 subpages...

IMO, have english links to english homepage and from your homepage link to the other languages. As you said: "it would be best if I could get a link for each page in its language".
Also, I don't know how is it in you business, but usually for the english keywords you have bigger competition.

Thats why I got multiplie languages ;)

But what I really meant to ask was:

Is it ok if I just send all links to my main page and will it then split the link value over the other subpages/languages?

Or will I lose alot of link value, so the obviously best way would be to send some links to each suppage...

Remember, I dont care how the main page rank, thats just a welcome page where the user can choose his language...

Most English website owners will likely only link to the mainpage so that is the best you can get for them... most foreign language websites would prefer linking towards their perferred language page [section] so this is where you make gains in other languages.

Hi misterdh,

One important thing to bear in mind is that deep links (ie: links to pages below your home page) normally have more benefit to you than links to your home page (assuming - of course - that they link to relevant pages)...
Also, PR passed to your deeper pages will filter back to your home page (assuming you link to it from pages within your domain).

Most people get links to the home page because it's the page they most want to optimise/promote... Logically of course - if you don't really want to optimise/promote your home page - you don't really need any links to it!

If you are only getting English links, I would probably be inclined to split them between the home page and the (next) main English page, but strictly speaking you could ignore the home page altogether... although the best approach would be to optimise the home page too!

Edit (Cross-posted with Fathom): - Fathom is right of course, you might find it harder to get links to sub-pages... but if you can - you should

rhwd2003 agrees: Really useful information when it comes to linking!
newbieuk23 agrees: I agree. I am increasingly finding that internal pages with few external links pointing to them are
becoming much less visible in Google. So deep linking is vital if you want all pages on your site to
work for you.

I've decided to only send links in the right language to the right subpage... I think that will optimize the pages best...

What is the best way for building backlinks for a website. Of late I've seen webmasters and SEOs frowning on the idea of link exchanges. But we all know that backlinks are a prerequisite for ranking well in search engines, especially Google.

So has link exchange become a thing of the past. What's the best way for creating backlinks then, directory submissions, articles, press releases, blogs, forums....what?

Kindly do let me know about it?

Thanks a ton in advance !

Well Google doesnt like link exchanges but a few wont hurt you... actually no off-page optimation shuld/can hurt you, because then it would be easy for your competition to ruin your websites rankings..

But one way links are way, way, way better. I am only focusing on one ways now...
