How should this url look?

We created some non English content. One was in French and we made the url look like this and it ranks well for the keyterms in google.fr which is what we want.

www.mysite.com/fr.htm

I would like to add another french page linked up from that french page. We use a CMS so can't really make the page go to www.mysite.com/fr/newpage.htm or at least I dont know how.

My question is how should we make the url read for the best google optimization. These are the two ways I was thinking of.

A. www.mysite.com/fr-newpage.htm
B. www.mysite.com/fr.newpage.htm

Usually I wouldnt give much thought into the url name but it seems to play a big impact on fr,de,uk and non .com pages.

Thanks alot

www.mysite.com/fr-new-page.htm would...

...probably be a good way to do this. Since fr, new and page are all separate words I would use a hyphen between each word.

You could also do www.mysite.com/fr-1.htm????

Do not use: www.mysite.com/fr.newpage.htm I do not think this will even work... fr.newpage.htm..not named correctly. I would use www.mysite.com/fr-new-page.htm where new-page is an actual keyword phrase. Always use important keyword phrases when naming files, folders, etc.

Most modern operating systems have no problem with a period in the file name. It is treated like any other character.

This may actually be a problem for you however ....

Google treats '-' as a separator between words, and will treat them as two words (like 'body guard').

An underscore is treated as a character so the words are treated as a partial word match (a word that contains the keyword like 'bodyguard' or 'body_guard'). I think period will also suffer the same fate.

That is kind of what I was afraid of. I guess I'll just have to test it out and see. My CMS might allow me to put in a slash when I name the page. But to be honest I know diddly about web development so hopefully this would work and be the same thing?
