I have no idea how to optimise videos well within YouTube (have heard lots of bits and pieces about views, the benefit of actually writing out the words contained in the video, etc.), but you could probably do well relatively easily in the normal SERPs by simply building a few links to your video.

From my personal experience I can say that it is really necessary to embed the youtube code or post your video url wherever possible - in your social nets, blog, leave the link on forums or blog comments if it is relevant to the discussed topic of course. It guarantees you the increase in views. And sure, don't make crap videos, try your best to make it as perfect as you can.

I just have one tip to add. Select the most compelling thumbnail. It could be outrageous, or blasphemous or sensuous or anything else that forces a visitor to click. Thats the way to hit the top on you tube.

How exactly you choose a thumbnail I am not sure. Normally youtube gives me three thumbnails to choose from. But I have seens videos where the thumbnails do not even appear in the actual video. I am not sure how they do it.
