How many words in the description meta tag?

    Hi,

Quick question, how many words do you all think should be in the description meta tag?

    Steve,

It really depends on what search engine you want to optimize for. For Google I would say about 144 characters to be effective, but it can index several times that. Focus on the title more importantly. If you are looking to optimize for Inktomi, you can stretch the description to 244, and it indexes several times that as well.

    Hi Phoenix,

So if I keep the description to around 200 characters that should be about right?

Would the same amount be true for keywords as I have been advised that can go up to 500 characters?

    Steve,

If you keep the description to about 200 characters that should be fine. Plus in 200 characters you can say along about your site or page with your keywords. Feel free to go beyond 200 characters, no problem there, but you risk repeating keyword to many times, and part of your description getting ignored in the serps.

    Hope that helps.

For what its worth, Google uses my meta description on my index pages. I am usually ranked one or 2 under my keywords. They always stop at 129 when indexing my site using the description only and nothing else. On internal pages, they pick out parts of my text on the site.
I just went and checked and 129 is the number for me. The one site I have that has a 200 word meta description is ranked lower than the other 2.
