How Google ranks webpages (Tutorial)
here you go people...this post is for people who are trying to be an SEO...
this is just a quick overview of how google ranks webpages... Inbound link text: 10 points. title: 10 points domain name: 7 points large h1-h2 headings: 5 points first sentence of first paragraph 5 points path or filename: 4 points proximity (multi kws): 4 beginning of a sentence 1.5 points bold or italic text: 1 points usage in text: 1 point title attribute: 1 point alt tag: .5 point meta descrip: .5 points meta keywords: .05 point I read lots about this in many places... Thanks Sunny (SEO) |

Sunny - I don't agree with some of your points, but that's what forums are for, right? For discussion
I don't agree with the following ... >domain name: 7 points Choosing the right domain name is important, but only because of the way people will link to you. The name in itself would never get 7 points. It's just that if you have a domain name that is keyword1-keyword2, many people will link to you that way and that will help your rankings. But, no matter what your domain name, if nobody links to you you will be nowhere in Google. >path or filename: 4 points I have recently learned (thanks Darrin!) that this does have an effect, but 4 points is much too much. The effect is less than just mentioning the keyword another time in normal text. >alt tag: .5 point alt tag in images that are not links has no effect at all. Alt tags in images that are links have an enormous effect. >meta descrip: .5 points meta keywords: .05 point Neither of these meta tags has any effect at all in my opinion. Google simply does not use them. Gringo. |

Something I've never been clear on: does text in links help boost ranking more if it comes from outside the site? I've seen people say here that creating internal text links w/ keywords can really help boost ranking, though I haven't had much opportunity to test this out. So are the two rated equally, nearly equally, or totally unequally?

Homer - that's arguably THE most important factor in the Google algorithm. If you can get your keywords in the text of many links from high PR external pages you'll be in a good position in Google. Gringo. |

That's as I thought, though there was a post a while back that made me wonder if internal links could acheive similar results.
Thx. |

Gringo - I was pretty tired when I wrote that last night. What I was wondering about was darkroom's assertion that inbound link text rates a score of '10'. Obviously inbound links are the all-important factor, but how does the text in local links fit in to this? What 'score' would they merit?
You said earlier (http://www.seochat.com/viewtopic.php?t=133&) "What could help you, however, is if all your internal pages have a link back to the homepage using your main keyword(s) as the anchor text. It won't help your PR but it will help your rankings for those keywords." I was just wondering where that tactic fits into darkroom's scoring scheme, compared with inbound links. Homer |

Not sure if inbound links fit here... they'd prolly go in their own category. There are so many factors (PR of page that links to you for one). I think DR was trying to do page optimization rather than links/PR optimization

Homer - link text is all important, no matter what "points" they score on any scale. But remember it is only 1 factor out of possibly hundreds.
External links are almost certainly much more important than internal links, but internal ones will count to some extent as well. Since you can influence this factor, therefore, make sure your own links reflect your keywords but don't overdo it - try to incorporate some variety in the keywords chosen. e.g. <a href="hotels.htm">Moon hotels</a> ... and ... <a href="hotels.htm">Cheap Hotels on the Moon</a> etc. Gringo. |
