How do I improve my rankings?

Help!!! I recently found out about SeoChat.com about a month ago, and have been learning a lot.

Some of the advise I received, I implemented and it is working.

Here is my question...I'm currently the 1st listing on the 5th page of google, when you type in the keyword Wedding.

What area should I focus on to keep boosting towards the first page. Buying links? More Content? Any help is appreciated!!

Thanks

Jason

Definately more links.

I would suggest you concentrate on more specific keywords like - wedding car hie - wedding this - wedding that etc.

You will stand a much better chance of ranking and the terms will have more targeted visitors that will convert to a sale better.

You have to ask - what are you searching for when you type in wedding? Its far too vague.

Better if you optimized the content with your targeted keyword and get more quality links using your targeted keywords as anchor text.

Try to get valid links from reputable sources, maybe try emailing wedding magazine websites, wedding planning sites, and any other website that is related to your industry and setup a link exchange. This can be done either through a like-kind exchange where you link to them and they link to you or you can pay them to have a link or banner on their page. I think I prefer text links to banners for SEO purposes because the text carries more weight than a picture (which usually has alt tags left off when dealing with unexperienced sites). Other than that, I think you should follow the advice of those posting before me and maybe be more specific as I doubt your target audience is typing solely "wedding".

consider geotargetting ie weddings in seattle, etc. It tends to be much easier to gain no 1 spot for specific geographic regions.

Some good advice on targeting longtail searches in this article. ie

Quote:
Let's say you're looking for a red car, you want a new car and it has to be red. On a fluke you think: "Hey, Lexus makes a nice ride, let me see what comes up when I do a quick search." So you plug in the keywords: red + Lexus, what do you find? A hodgepodge of sites related to everything from the Lexus that someone is trying to sell on eBay to the guy so in love with his car he's created a MySpace page about it.

Chances are it doesn't really matter because you weren't that interested in the red car to begin with. But if you search on more finite terms, let's say red + Lexus + 4WD + sunroof, now we're talking a consumer who is 95% closer to a buy than the guy Googling "red + Lexus". In order for you to find your audience in the maze of traffic and the enormity of messages online, you'll need to get very, very focused.

Good luck

Weddings

WeddingGuy,

weddings is a tough area. But I suggest you work on developing your position in a specific niche.

As a fellow newbie and having done a lot of reading on this and other forums, I have to agree with all posts.

The word wedding is far to generic and competitive a keyword. Target niche markets and provide great content.

A wedding site should be ideal for good quality link bait; what about providing a top 10 checklist for the bride and another one for the groom and best man etc ?

good luck

Lots of good advice here - primarily about targetting achievable keywords.

If you have implemented changes < 1 month ago you'll find that some of those changes take quite a while to have an effect.

I changed the thread title 'cos the original sucked (see here)!

More content AND more links. Unfortunately, you can't really skimp on either one. Backlinks are always the #1 priority, but it really helps if you have a lot of well-targetted and original content.

It's all well and good to get a bunch of links and rank high, but you also want to give people a reason to choose your site instead of the others in the SERPs.

When you say "content" do you mean having alot of pages within your site that are keyword related or do you mean content just on the home page? Because I've had some people here tell me you can move to the top of SERP's with a one-page site and great quality backlinks.

WeddingGuy - I know how tough the wedding business is. I've got two wedding related websites (one targeting "wedding invitations" and the other targeting "wedding veils" and "wedding tiaras") myself and it's hard to outrank the people who have been around a long time - but I've seen it done.
