I started a new long tail website about two weeks ago and the variations in ranking don't make sense. Maybe you can help me understand.
Here is the details of what I did and the rankings ( i am always testing with the same key word ) the website is finearts-movers.com and the keyword is finearts movers 1) I created my website with wordpress, optimized tags, titles, wrote some targeted content, site map , etc. it was ranked in approx 25th position 2) i let it rest for 7 days then i decided to work more on it. created specific content and wrote 4-5 targeted posts. I submited an article on ezines articles.com . I submited the website on Digg the day after I was ranked number one in google and when i was searchin with the key word I would find the Digg link in number 4 3) it stayed like that for one day I was really excited, and now it got moved in 12th position on the second page Can somebody explain what happened? |

1): Everflux - positions (especially on long tail keywords) are re-evaluated constantly.. there is no "fixed index"
2): The bookmarking effects of Digg can be quite shortlived.

The SERP is quite dymanic for a new domain. You shouldn't worry too much about the position change.

The following things can effect your SERP
1) A Data Center Change (this happens quite frequently - especially when a new algorithm is being rolled out) 2) You were logged into a google account and then viewed again when logged out. Google "tweaks" results based on your search preferences when logged into a Google account 3) You viewed from different locations. The next town may be using a different data center so when you look at home and at work you may get different SERPs. 4) The effect of a social bookmarking site such as digg can have a very short term effect. 5) The resultant increase in activity on your site after putting up some new content can result in a short term boost. 6) If you are not doing more than your competetiors you will slip, do some work you will rank above them, stop doing work, they will go above you. The age of your site is also an issue. There is defiantely still a time based modifier for new sites and the age of your site and links to it has a big effect on SERPs too.

New sites tend to get a bonus in the beginning and than they eventually go back to their natural position, that could be it

Thanks for your tips, since it is indeed a long tail niche website and one bookmark on digg was enough to put it in #1 would you recommend that I bookmark a different article regularly or have my friends help me by submitting my url to digg once in a while? you are right about different ranking in the SERP depending if I use google.ca, google.com or if I am logging in or not. How come there is a difference? Alex |

there is nothing called enough in SEO world. You should get as many as relevant links pointing to your website. the benefit of a bookmark is that ppl gonna share your website, and not getting link juice.
there is a difference between .com , .ca, .cn because of difference in data center. If you open a Google webmaster tools account, you will see you can target specific region. that's why you get different SERP from .com to .ca Cheers Quote:
