How Can I Tell Google NOT To Translate My Pages?
Hi, My english language travel site had been acheiving top ten rankings for years for many location specific keywords e.g Spain Holiday Deals. Then about 3 months ago i started to notice our rankings drop but only for non english speaking countries
Google had started to show a "translate this page" option beside our listings. I assumed this had something to do with our drop in rankings so added the tag <HTML lang="en"> to each page so google would read the pages in english and not try and translate them. 3 months on and Google still shows the "translate this page" option and our rankings continue to drop any ideas on what i could i do to get google to stop trying to translate the pages? |

I don't think this effects your rankings at all. Google is providing a service for people who do not read the language an option of reading it in their native language.

Thanks for the reply but you see its not a useful service, its all mixed up. what google is doing for example is for an english language page we have about holidays in Italy it offers a "translate this page" option. when you click on this option it says "This page was automatically translated from Italian" but the page is NOT in Italian.
Our rankings were fine until this "translate" option started to appear. We also have many competitors who offer the same service and none of their sites have this "translate" option beside their listings |

I also believe that the 'translate' option does not cause problems for your rankings. However, is it possible that a large part of the backlinks to your site come from sites hosted in other countries like Spain or Italy?
In that case, Google will assume that your site is related to Spain or Italy which means that you'll drop in rankings in data centres related to english. |

I have found a few foreign language sites linking to us. Is there any way of blocking the links coming from these sites besides contacting the webmaster which i will do but i dont expect too many replies.
seems a crazy situation that i have to try remove these links as the ones i have found so far are good links |

I would keep those links, links to your site are good. You fall in serps is more than likely another cause.

Don't get rid of links. Unless you are linking OUT to a bad site no incoming links will ever hurt you. I have a totally english site yet I got a couple of good spanish/Portuguese links and now rank on the Portuguese search engine as well. These links will never hurt you. All they can do is rank you for some spanish terms and raise your value of your site. In this case I would suggest getting your whole site translated unless it is the type of site that is mainly US oriented(assuming your american or your country)
The translate button is a good feature and will not hurt your site.

Hi,
The problem you have is not directly related to the Google translation service, but your description is clear enough to know what happens. Google does not trust the tags that identify the language of a web page. Google analyzes the text content of each web page and, based on that, it decides itself what the language of the page is. In most cases, Google does this quite well, but, in a few cases, they make a wrong guess. I had the same problem with a tourism site. If your page contains many names of Italian cities or several Italian words, Google thinks that the page is in Italian. You could try to email Google about that or change the content of the page in a way that would make the Italian words less visible. This is not related to the origin of your backlinks. In any case, what i said is that backlinks from other countries only affect the way Google sees your site if the majority of your backlinks come from there. A few backlinks are of course NOT a problem but rather helpful

Building on Jean-Luc's suggestion...
If you dare - you can try to turn some (or most) of the Italian words on the page into javascript, using <script type="text/javascript">document.write("bla bla");</script> Maybe that'll convince googlebot. Just realise that doing that might seriously hurt your page's ranking for those words. I dunno if they bring you unsuspected but good traffic. Also, instead of <html lang="en">, this meta tag might help: <meta http-equiv="content-language" content="en" /> I'm not sure if it will, but it's worth a shot. Anyway, it's an official meta, not some lame one that's supposed to help SEO like "revisit-after"
