Help me understand Google and backlinks
I typed in link:http://domainname and saw that the site had 285 links.
I think we to the first one, did a view source, and could not find domainname in the source. I went to the cached page and got the same thing. Where is the link coming form? Thanks

Back links are actually the sites where your site is linked. These are other site than your source site. These back links comes through effective SEO works like on page and off page optimization. Back links plays good role in putting site top on major search engines. The more effective back links the more the page rank of the site.

Thanks.
I understand. I mistyped. My question is: I got a list of sites linking to a competitor according to link:competitorsite.com I went to the first site listed as linking to that site. I did a view source and a find but could not find the url of the competitor site. So I assume that at one time a site linked to the competitor site, does not now, but Google still values the link. Is that right? For how long? Thanks Webconsul
