    Help with lost Google traffic

    Hi everyone,

I am wondering if you can advice how to bring back lost traffic coming from Google?

AllYouCanRead.com is one of the largest media directories on the web. We were ranking very high in almost all major search engines; Google, Yahoo, MSN for terms (<city>/<state>/<country name> newspapers and <country name> magazines). After just 2 months of its launch USA Today selected AllYouCanRead.com as the Hot Site of the Year 2001.

But on the 24th of November 2004 our traffic from Google, which constitutes about 70% of our traffic, has disappeared. Before that day we were receiving about 10,000 visits from Google and over 24,000 pages were indexed in their search engine. Now we receive only about 100 (hundred) visits and only about 150-200 pages are indexed. The rest of the pages are showing URLs only in Google search results. Besides even if you search "allyoucanread" in Google it lists all the sites that link or redirect to us but our site is nowhere visible.

    Thank you.

P.S. Please see the site timeline on the next post.

    Help with Google traffic: Timeline

    October 2001 - Site Launch
November 2001 - Press Release distribution to national and internation media
December 2001 - USA Today selected AllYouCanRead.com site of the week (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/2001/12/18/hotsites.htm)
December 2001 - Included in Yahoo directory just after 1 day after application (http://dir.yahoo.com/News_and_Media/Newspapers/Web_Directories/)
December 2001 - Included in DMOZ directory under http://dmoz.org/News/Directories/ and http://dmoz.org/News/Newspapers/Directories/
December 2001 - included in numerous library sites including lii.org (inbound links only no link exchange)
January 2002 - USA Today selected Hot Site of the Year in their January 7th paper issue (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/2002/01/07/hotsites.htm)
May 2002 - Yahoo! Internet Life selected AllYouCanRead as the Incredibly useful site of the month
July 2003 - AskMen.com site of the day
October 2003 - about 900,000 pageviews and 300,000 unique visitors per month achieved by using keywords in Title tag, metatags, Header and crumbs. We almost always were Top 1-3 positions in Google, Yahoo (which that time was showing results from Google) for <city name> newspapers, <country name> newspapers, <country name> magazines and <category name> magazines (such as men's magazines, teen's magazines, adult magazines).
March 2004 - Added new section in AllYouCanRead about country references
August 2004 - Pick traffic about 1,500,000 pageviews per month
October 2004 - Strong growth of unique visitors due to removal of pop-unders
November 2004 - Site traffic from Google disappeared ( from almost 9000-10,000 daily referrals went down to 60-90)
December 2004 - Almost all our indexed pages(24,000 pages) in Google were under supplemental results
January 2005 - we found an error in Google listing: the cache:http://www.allyoucanread.com/ was not our site url it was http://www.hexafind.com/getLink-1432639.html. Contacted to Google and
    receive following response:

    =========================================

Thank you for your reply, and for the additional information you provided. We apologize for any confusion.

We have passed your email on to our engineering team for further investigation. We appreciate your patience, and your taking the time to bring this to our attention.

    Regards,
    The Google Team

    ========================================
    *** Still no response

March 2005 - Our home page cached correctly for about a week then description of the site switched to the DMOZ description
April 2005 - our home page again disappeared from Google cache; if somebody types allyoucanread in Google they cannot find our home page nowhere in the listings. Only somewhere in the middle of the second page of search results (in about 15th position) you can find Croatian flag page from
    AllYouCanRead.com

With Yahoo during that period we receive steady growth with their referrals, the same with MSN. But something is really WRONG with our listing in Google.

I don't do site/coding reviews, but may want to have a look at:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=allinurl%3Awww.allyoucanread.co m+

might be part of your problem.

Love to get some feedback from others.

Welcome to page jacking hell. I can't get them to take my pages unjacked, even with the old removal tool trick. I wish someone with some money to burn would sue their asses, get some media attention, problem fixed.

    gchaney,

I checked the url you provided, but did not see problem with it. Most of the external sites use "allyoucanread.com" directly in their urls. Does not look hijacking. What bothers me is cache:www.allyoucanread.com in January 05 showed the http://www.hexafind.com/getLink-1432639.html which Google "decoded to pass to their engineering teem for further investigation. Right now situation is even worse. The cache:www.allyoucanread.com is empty...

    Looks like hijacking after all.

Have you tried contacting Google about this via feb05feedback@googlegroups.com with the word "canonicalpage" in the subject? Yours might be an early example/victim of the phenomenon. Dunno if that email address is still up though...

Can someone explain to me exactly how this hi-jacking is being done ? If it is so easy how come some "Mega Sites" have not been hi-jacked ?

    - If one where I am sure there would be a hell of a stink about it - and maybe google would do something to stop it.

    allyoucanread,

when I do a search for your URL:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&c2coff=1&q=www.allyoucan read.com&btnG=Search

grackelfish.com/link.php?id=58 - that URL comes instead of yours, I think this is your main problem.

Probably this is a directory and the most strange thing is that it is doing 301 Redirect to your site, not 302, so it won't be a problem, but I guess it is.

    Digital,

Thanks for the hint. Do you know how I can correct it?
