There has been a lot of debate about Google favouring brands. It could be argued that big brand websites probably had more inbound links and higher Pagerank anyway.

I'm bothered by the whole concept that Google presumes to know what you are searching for.

Instead of educating searchers how to write a query, they put you in "automatic mode".

It's as if the public library only placed best sellers on the shelf, and all other books down in the basement. Really skews the access to information and distorts the perception of what is relevant.

Ultimately Google will lose relevance if its search results are biased.

Google pushed brand several months back and search results were settling prior to last Christmas to reflect this. Remember though Google is measuring online branding and so online facilities will influence this through citations etc

In relation to brand reputation it is an easy task to get a brand nailed with bad PR, I think there is plenty of it around and I have myself been contracted to both clean reputations and ensure for others they are dirtied too.

there's no big deal about it, if you have an agenda you can nail a brand, the problem with most PR agencies is that they are online noobs and having lectured at many London agencies they still do not grasp how to push brand online properly let alone handle brand reputation.
