    H1 tag dillema

So we are optimizing our blog for SEO. My developer wants to make the H1 tag our logo....

Wouldn't it be best to make the blog post titles the H1 tag?

Keep the logo an image. I would use H2's for blog titles personally. Either way,in the long run - it won't matter too much.

The main title should be H1, why not change the logo image to h2, problem solved (hopefully)

Aren't H2 tags supposed to be for the second most important heading on the page? I just don't understand the h* tag used to surround a logo.

http://www.w3.org/ use their main logo as the H1

    Code:
    <h1 class="logo"><a tabindex="2" accesskey="1" href="/"><img src="/2008/site/images/logo-w3c-mobile-lg" width="90" height="53" alt="W3C" /></a> <span class="alt-logo">W3C</span></h1>

a lot of people use H1 H2 and H3 on their sites. You over do it, you lose the value.

as long as you have descriptive keywords in your logo description field google will know what the logo means.

I agree totally. With regard to SEO, on-page shortcomings are easily overcome by good links/off-page factors.

We aren't using a plain text logo.... We're using an image logo but he wants to put that within h1 tags.

I did point out that the World Wide Web Consortium use their logo as their h1 so it isn't that crazy of an idea.

Not only will it not help SEO it also is actually a little crazy because it is extremely bad markup. The World Wide Web Consortium isn't going to care about some tiny bump down for a page structure that looks like spam. But a smaller site like people here tend to run might.

Plus it makes your CSSs into a mess.

There is no issue to use one H1 tag for the site name or post title which more specific.

Using h2 tags in remaining places will makes sense

a hell lot of wordpress themes which claim to be SEO OPTIMIZED use that same tactics. They put your Logo Text or Logo Graphic into an H1 tag.

The Idea behind it probably is -that logo area being the most important place on any page would get you the best link value. I somewhat agree to that notion. So if you are going to use H*s on your page at all the higher they are the better.

People probably dont use the Logo within H2s because they feel no H2 should Precede the H1. I dont think that way. So I would happily put my Logo Graphics with Alt inside an H2 and put my Post/Page Title(headline) in H1.

Apart from the onpage SEO value it helps when you are viewing in text only mode like RSS readers and stuff which are simpler versions.
