Header tags help define different sections of a page. If your page has several sub topics, use the H1 for your main subject and H2's for subsection of your main topic.
Importance: not major but one of two things I pay attention to. Using H tags won't make a world of difference search engine wise but it's helpful for your site visitors.

Basically h1, h2 and h3 are heading tags for your webpage(distinguish for their sizes and prefrences).
but the secondary function of these tags is to increase your page rank...
According to seo techniques, there should b only one h1 tag/page because Google mainly search for h1 Heading..
for rest of your subheadings you may use h2 and h3.... h6 headings tags..

Yup - but I still have to wonder.... why do people think it's a bad thing to have more than one?
I'm not saying you *should* have more than one, I'm just saying there are situations that call for it, and that you shouldn't go out of your way to change that.
KP - check out the [ yt] video # [/ yt] tag. Pretty cool:

Well, I'm not going to argue with the Cutts! If he says it's OK to do, and it makes sense to do, then do it if you like! I've never been a believer that having more than one H1 is going to hurt a webpage's ability to rank well. If it looks good and logical to the user, then do it. It won't make or break your campaign...

The main title of the article is the H1 tag, the headings and the subheadings of the page are the H2 and H3 tags of the article. You can use the primary keyword in H1 and the secondary keyword in H2 and H3 tags. But be sure it is not keyword stuff

I'm curious to know a situation that would warrant more than one H1 tag? Why not just create a new page if there are more than one important "components" to a page? Not that an H1 tag makes a huge difference SERP's wise but I think if something is equally as important as another topic, it deserves it's own page.
I'm not challenging your logic, just looking for a deeper explanation of your thought process.

Following is a quote from W3c:
http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG10-HTML-TECHS/
Quote:
Since some users skim through a document by navigating its headings, it is important to use them appropriately to convey document structure. Users should order heading elements properly. For example, in HTML, H2 elements should follow H1 elements, H3 elements should follow H2 elements, etc. Content developers should not "skip" levels (e.g., H1 directly to H3). Do not use headings to create font effects; use style sheets to change font styles for example.
Having multiple H1 doesn't have bad effect on SEO. They are not speaking about multiple H1 tags. But according to them headings tags should be ordered properly.
