Guest posts are they worth the effort?
Guest posts are talked about a lot as a way to gain links but for helping you gain higher SERPs, are they worth the trouble to write? I ask this question as there are no guarantees that the guest post will receive much link juice from the site’s internal linking structure or external sites linking and it takes a lot of resource to write guest posts.

My answer is yes - but not for the links. Post on respectable blogs that have heavy traffic and post an informative and interesting response to the blog. Preferably be one of the first to post so keep an eye out for new blog entries.
Why? Because people read the blog and then some of the responses. If yours seems educated and informed they will feel more confident when contacting you for whatever service or product you sell. So posts like "great, thanks for that, I've bookmarked it" are useless but I think you already get that.

Agreed. Simply Guest post on the related blogs and get backlinks. The content must be informative and related.

Thanks for the response, so really the idea of guest posting should be to boost your rep and display that you are an authority which in turn leads to traffic and potentially links off the back of that traffic. So guest posting shouldn't be used as a primary link source but more as an indirect method for gaining natural links?

Absolutely, as Doodled said, when you leave an educated response people will feel confident in your abilities. It works like word-of-mouth advertising.

Guest Posting is one of the best service right now.. The key advantage of guest blogging is it helps getting organic visitors to your site. Search engines also seems to rate those websites higher which used guest blogging as it is very effective technique compared to other SEO techniques. Also it helps to increase the strength of the brand and provide a status of an expert in the field.

Agree but guest blog posts, all by themselves, do increase rankings. That does not necessarily mean they are worth doing. It’s easy to forget about opportunity cost as an SEO when we have had past success with a given tactic. Far too often, we see results, and continue doing it as long as we possibly can. The value of an activity like guest posting is only worth doing if there’s nothing better we could be doing with our time.

Absolutely yes. But, you should not do it with the "linking" mindset where in you just hastily craft an article for the sake of leaving a link on a blog.
Think of it as a networking strategy. It will expand the people you connect with online by contributing something valuable to high quality blogs. You will get more exposure that way.

The importance of guest post can not be under estimated. Howver it is not the medium to post several promotional links . This practice reduces the reliabity of posts.

Guest post is a good way to get backlinks, to create readership and is popular in use currently. However don't over do it and also don't be surprised if in coming days Google may come up with some updates to counter Guest blogging. Whichever way works, people are bound to exploit that and it may not act as genuine way to get backlinks.
One argument which many webmaster gives against Guest blogging is, your content should be compelling itself to generate backlink, and Guest blogging is also in a way link creation techniques and Google doesn't endorse any manual link gathering techniques.
