Your post made me do a bit of searching and something dawned on me looking at the results.
Googles Gmail has a spam filter which could very well be used as a red flag (speaking of the content in these marked spam emails)
And if it does set off a flag (because you know damn well Google can see everything in your g-mail account, addresses, body text, links) a person could spam the crap out of people with g-mail addresses and use their competitors links in the spam emails and let the people do all the work.

Back on topic:
Looks like there's a little bit on the subject but it all looks like speculation and guesses, and some sad ones at that.
One says, it about a certain set of words, and on another it's about social media tricks.
And some don't say anything but rather are just plain spam.

Maybe I'll start a blog with what I mentioned above about g-mail and start a new rumor...maybe call it the up-coming 'Killer Whale' update.
