Google Webmaster 'Not Found' link
Hey
Just looking through my Google webmaster account and have seen for a while now it says there are two links which cannot be found. They are internal links but is there a way to find where on the site these originate? The site is quite large and it would be difficult to search through every page individually. They were last calculated 3rd july and june 23rd this year.

Have you clicked on them? if the pages do not exist try using link:theurl.com and that would be the page linking to them. If it still persists put a 301 redirect on the not found page to a relevant page. |

I like to use auditmypc.com
Go to this URL and click the "Webmaster Tool" image: http://www.auditmypc. com/web-master-tools.asp (remove the space before the com). Enter your URL and let it process the site. Once its finished, export the document as a HTML report. Open up your exported document and it will show you exactly what errors there are and where to find them. |

thegodfather's suggestion might work, but I can imagine that it can take ages for a large site to be processed. I have not found a way to get quick results, either. Usually, checking the links-tab in the Webmasters Tool did not help much either
You can try to use the site command and add the url or something to filter. |

That's a good suggestion. I sometimes do that if I don't want to wait for an online tool to process and evaluate my site (which can take a while as you rightly stated Chris). If, for some reason, I can't find the problem; I upload a file with the exact filename that Google says it can't find. I usually leave the document blank, but I don't suppose there's any harm in adding content. |

Thanks for your replies guys. The applet didn't seem to load properly on the link you gave and I don't know what the site command is you mentioned?
Bottom line is will these missing links affect my position with the big G? |

Enter the URL into ClickTracks or other analytics (you will probably need to do this manually) then look for the referrals.

Sorry mate, I forgot to mention that you need to have the latest version of Java installed on your computer... It should tell you that on the auditmypc.com site. |

Thanks for that. I do have the latest Java update installed but it might be a Mac thing. Anyway, one of the missing links has now disappeared from the errors so I will just keep an eye out for the other one and see if that goes too. I know Google is slow to update links.

You can also download Link Checker Pro's 30 free trial:
http://www.link-checker-pro.com/download.htm It processes every link within your site and gives you details of where to find the missing/broken ones. |
