Google uses alt-tags in website descriptions?

I never realized this until today, when I noticed the description of my website in google listed a few of my alt-tags. Has this always been the case? Seems like alt-tags are more important then people lead me to believe.

    (sorry about the old news)

if your site doesn't have a proper description meta tag it will pull data from the content of the site itself. even if that means pulling from an image alt-tag.
It's been fun everyone... Time to leave for good. See this for more details.

I've seen Google change a site's description for no apparent reason, using either Meta description or other text from the page. It's not surprizing that your img alt tag was used.
