Also where my home page use to rank, some of my deeper pages on the site have replaced the home page (good as more relevant), however when i check this on a diferent computer to double check my home page is still listed?

im not entirely sure if its just a temporary thing but any help would be appreciated

Well, here's what I would do:

Relax, I've seen this happen before where listings will be gone 1-3 days. I don't know WHY, or HOW this happens, but I've seen it, infact last week with one of my sites.

Second, check your backlinks. It's possible a link expired or changed that was pointing to you, judging by this, it (if so) would have been a very powerful link - do you chck your backlinks? Do you keep records of them? If not, I suggest creating a spreadsheet of your GOOD links and keep track of them - I know I do.

Now that I think of it. When my homepage changed to the deep page I feel down a few spots and for one keyword was gone for 4 days, then I reappeared where my homepage was, but with the deep link.

If this is the first day, I would check back in a day or two and keep an eye on it. If it's been over a week then I would check your backlinks.

I am not an expert but I assume your links may be devalued. Your ranking will stable if your link profile have their values and not changed or dropped from Google perspective.

However, as joshz said - Relax, and wait for a couple of days tracking how your ranking goes.

That's first what I thought, but if his long tail page is replacing his homepage, I HIGHLY doubt it has to do with backlink devalue. I think Google is trying to re-classify his site and which page to display.

However, this is my theory - I faced the same thing on a few pages as it was shifted from domain.com to domain.com/keyword-product

This is normal if you are improving SEO on those longer tail pages.

If your working to Boost SEO on those longer tail pages, title tag, url, links then that page will climb the ranks pretty quick to the position of your home page. When it gets near your home page they will "Join", which ever link is stronger takes it's place. The weaker one will be sent way back in the ranks.

I have seen this happen time and time again on pages 1-3. A Specifically targeted Longer tail page will quickly catch up to homepage on page 2, replace it, then send home page back to page 5+.

Was this recent, or a little while ago? I'm starting to think there was a big change to the aglo recently - I've seen a lot of these posts on other forums and blogs.

To the OP, please keep us updated as you find out more information - I would love to hear your SERPs came back to normal.

Not that I have seen.

One reason these things seem to come in waves is that sites like SEOchat rank very well. One guy makes a post "my rank disappeared what happened" and that page ranks.

A bunch of other guys who lost their rank type the same query into google and find the forum. Before you know it a bunch of people have joined all asking the same question, or those that haven't been active for a while sign on and ask the same question.

Throw in the fact that there are a million bloggers out there all looking for something to write about, looking for trends etc etc and suddenly the whole Internet is awash with people saying the same thing.

That's partly why there is so much sh** written about SEO!

Hi,

Update:

My deep liniked page has taken over 3 more posistions over my homepage (which has dropped massively)

I only started deep linking 3 months ago (thinking i was wasting my time and links) but it seems to have paid off, even though i have noticed a slight drop (2-3 posistions for some keywords) i think its going to be easier to optimise my deep page going forward.

If anything changes i'll keep you posted.

Always log out when you check stuff like this and add &pws=0 to your queries, to turn of personalization of results. These results are heavily skewed for terms and sites that you visit often.

When you are in your computer, try using different browser. It will show different result from the browser you are usually using. This is due to the personalization stuff of Google.
