Google Says Secure httpS:// Sites Will Rank Higher

I hope it makes a difference for us: Google will use 'HTTPS As a Ranking Signal'. Supposedly about 56% of sites are now secure.

    This is the problem though
HTTPS as a ranking signal. For now it's only a very lightweight signal—affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content
If they are trying to return the most relevant content then returning content that they see as less relevant simply because it is supposedly ‘more secure’ would defeat there purpose. It will become quite a joke if the most common use of https becomes spammers trying to manipulate search results.

I won’t be worrying about it until I start seeing https sites beating me in my SERPs

    Thanks for the share…

As I know SSL are useful for sites where transactions are to be made, they don't play a major role over static websites (please correct me if i am wrong). Over webmaster blog they haven't mentioned anything about static websites or ecommerce ones.

My point is "how much will this SSL as ranking factor will effect static websites". Do I need to worry about buying SSL for my static websites?

    Please share your view.

It'll make a difference between position #102 and Position #87... but not in the top 10.

    I did some searching and
Supposedly about 56% of sites are now secure.
seems pretty unlikely to any search you run. Google displays https results a bit differently so easy to see. Ie under the tile in the results pages without out https are displayed as( www.thesite.com )(the green address) and sites with https are displayed ( https://www.thesite.com ). Try pretty much any search you wish and you do not see half the results coming from https sites so I do not know where that figure is coming from. Even a search for something like pay day loans only has two https sites on the first two pages.

I also see that there are numerous references on the web which claim “serving content over HTTPS is slower than serving it via HTTP.” HTTP vs HTTPS performance - Stack Overflow If this is true a negative of the switch may be that slower load times may loose customers.

So my friend did you see any ranking effect when you changed?

If anything it'll be one of those things you'll see google tweaking that matrix.

We moved to being secure when we launched the new site. The effect on traffic/rankings was almost immediate, but I attributed that to defeating our Panda problem. There is no way for me to determine if going secure had any effect at all one way or the other.

SSL only contributes only about less than 1% of all Ranking factors, I wouldn't worry too much about it for now at least. The most important part of ranking factors is still content and user experience. <snip>

It is a shame the owners killed the SEO test forum as we could of organized some tests over time.... That was one of the most useful forums here....

One cannot judge what Google brings in with this new update. Watch out for something new in this update also. Let time run and you will see another update which dismisses this.
